The County Westmeath village of Multyfarnham boasts an ancient monastery which was established in 1268 for Franciscan friars. Five hundred years later the village established a four day race meeting from Monday 22nd to Thursday 25th April 1765. The racing festival opened with a Plate for 5 year olds which was won by Colonel Maguire’s bay horse, and the next day an Open Purse went to Mr Wall’s chestnut mare who defeated Tulip. A Sweepstake on Wednesday 24th April saw a good battle between Slider, Silver Lac and Star before the former prevailed, and on the concluding day the race was won by Mr Nugent’s Merry Traveller. There are no further records of racing taking place in the village. |
